Forty years ago, then President Jimmy Carter signed into being the Hubert H. Humphrey Fellowship Program. This program brings mid-career professionals from around the world to the USA for a year of graduate level study, leadership development, and collaboration with our country and with each other. Basically it makes the world a smaller, more connected place.

Having been a host family to the program for over a decade, I had the privilege of taking time this past summer to visit many of my fellows around the world. It was extraordinary. People ask me why did I go to Mongolia, Azerbaijan, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Republic of Korea, Fiji and more, and I reply “Why not?” All you have to do is look at my photographs to see the beauty, the joy, the wonderful families I met.

Recently, I wrote to former President Carter to share these experiences and to express my gratitude. He not only created the program but has actively supported it throughout these four decades.

He and his wife wrote back. To find this card in my mailbox is a joy that I want to share with you now. In these times especially, we need to spread more good news.
